I believe that theatre is vital to our society, and it must be simultaneously challenging and accessible for an audience to achieve that vitality. Only in the theatre can the act of creative communion really occur. Theatre has the ability to take a huge idea and make it personal and human. When a piece of theatre really clicks, the exchange of energy between actors and audience creates a palpable electricity. It has the potential to change the lives of the actor and audience. To achieve that transcendent communion and electricity, each element of a production has to be in concert with the others. It is the director's job to distill those elements.
